Review Dick Hern: The Authorised Biography / Coronet Books:

In the gallop he jumped off, went full tilt, and was soon in a clear lead. At the finish. the closest of the others was 50 yards behind. The evidence that Brigadier Gerard was something out of the ordinary was unmistakeable. A gifted horseman, with one of the most outstanding Classic-winning training records of all time, Dick Hern, The Major, has also been celebrated-unfairly, this book contends, with some justification-as a notably unpleasant man, whose behaviour towards journalists and fellow professionals could sometimes be an unfortunate adjunct to his undoubted ability. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in the story of Brigadier Gerard-arguably the most outstanding and celebrated animal that Hern ever trained. This authorised account of that remarkable horse's hugely successful career makes for fascinating reading, but is overshadowed by a never before made public chronicle of the breathtakingly rancorous, and ultimately severed, relationship between Hern and the owner/breeders of the Brigadier, John and Jean Hislop, both now deceased. That the three could have shared such success, and yet their partnership have ended so acrimoniously, is remarkable to say the least-as is the vigour with which Jean Hislop, in particular, is condemned by Willett's version of the story. [+]
This is an unique perspective on the life and career of a significant figure in Turf history, and while one might wish for a more direct sense of contact with the man himself, those who have already read around the subject shouldn't hesitate from adding this to their racing bookshelf. Newcomers, or those whose preference is for the more elegiac strand of sports literature, might find this harder going. -Alex Hankin.

Review Redemption Song: Muhammad Ali and the Spirit of the Sixties / Verso Books:

Hero to some, traitor to others, Muhammad Ali managed to land powerful punches both in and out of the ring. What changed him from athlete to personality to a heavyweight of global reach? "At the core of the Ali story", Mike Marqusee reminds us, "is a young man who made daunting choices and stuck to them in the face of ghastly threats and glittering inducements. " Redemption Song explores those choices in the context of the turbulent times in which they were made. Ali and the 60s were a naturally synergistic fit. It was a time of great change, and Ali, the seeker, had remarkable access to the fomenters of that change. They, in turn, had a prime influence on his symbolic rebirth and re-emergence. As Redemption Song recounts, the night the young Cassius Clay upset Sonny Liston for the title in 1964, he skipped the traditional post-fight party and headed straight for Miami's black ghetto where he met with Black Muslim leader Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke and the running back Jim Brown, an early advocate of black rights in sports. The next morning, announcing to the white world that "I'm free to be what I want" and "I don't have to be what you want me to be," he confirmed rumours about his conversion to Islam. The conversion to Islam was only one of Ali's "daunting choices". As Marqusee moves through the decade, he carefully traces Ali's choices to confront the establishment and stand as a symbol of civil rights and the anti-war effort; his relationships with Malcolm X, Joe Louis, Jackie Robinson and Martin Luther King; and the importance of his travels to Africa. [+]
There's plenty of boxing too, but Marqusee is more interested in how Ali expanded that arena to take in the kinds of fights that go beyond the ropes. It's a tall order, but Redemption Song fulfils it with solid reporting and worthy analysis. -Jeff Silverman, Amazon. com.

Review 1966 and All That: My Autobiography / Headline Book Publishing:

How many "years of hurt" is it now? As England World Cup hero Geoff Hurst relates in his evocative, challenging autobiography 1966 and All That hardly a day goes by without someone reminding him of the hat-trick he scored in the Wembley Final that brought football "home" the last time. The referee had the whistle in his mouth. Bobby Moore, untroubled and completely in control as usual, chested the ball down, played a short pass to Alan Ball, received the return and looked upfield to see where to play it next. I remember Jack Charlton screaming at him, "Kick the f****** thing out of the ground!" Moore didn't, of course. With the final seconds ticking away he conjured a perfect pass to the galloping Hurst-the young West Ham striker with just seven international caps, who found himself spearheading Alf Ramsey's "wingless wonders" in English football's biggest ever game. The rest you probably think you know, but 1966 and All That is far from a rehash of rosy memories of the glory days. Hurst reflects on the "Ramsey years" with a critical eye, relating it all with refreshing candour-Ramsey's fierce loyalty to his players, matched only by his failure to grasp the first principles of public and personal relations; the anguish of Jimmy Greaves, the man Hurst controversially replaced; England's rise and fall, which saw Ramsey sacked in 1974-along the way revealing sides of legends like Pele, Beckenbauer, Banks and the Charltons, that put flesh on the fables, including the inside take on one of the most bizarre stories in World Cup history, when England captain Moore was arrested for jewellery theft at the 1970 tournament. There's also plenty of fascinating, forthright stuff on the "forgotten" Hurst-his phenomenal scoring record at club level, (though spending the bulk of his career at West Ham and Stoke kept medals to a minimum); a management career which will probably be best remembered for an acrimonious dismissal by Chelsea, that ended up in the courts; and his involvement in promoting England's 2006 World Cup bid, which provides a revealing glimpse at the political machinery driving football's world authorities. [+]
Hurst has plenty to say-not least on the England players who have inherited the weight of expectation he helped create in 1966-and the status accorded to a living sporting legend gives him the licence to speak freely. It's a combination that makes for engrossing reading. -Alex Hankin.
