Review Paolo Di Canio: The Autobiography / HarperCollinsWillow:And then he fell over. I've watched the video a million times and to this day I still don't understand how he managed to fall over like that. My first reaction was that somebody must have been crouching behind him, like in one of those old slapstick comedies. After a turbulent and semi-successful career in Italy-culminating with a key role in the title-winning AC Milan side of the mid 1990s-mild-mannered maestro Paolo Di Canio touched down briefly at Celtic, before unresolved contract wrangling saw him move on to Sheffield Wednesday, where his unique brand of "talent 'n' tantrums" quickly made him a firm "favourite" with fans, referees and fellow players alike. The infamous Paul Alcock incident-which brought his career to a grinding halt-is covered in detail, as you would expect, and Di Canio candidly measures the private psychological and emotional impact of his very public disgrace and vilification. Di Canio finally found a home with Harry Redknapp's West Ham-and in the years since has become arguably the finest individual talent currently playing in English football. Not afraid of speaking his mind-Middlesborough "the ugliest place in the world"; David James "this cretin", Danny Wilson "a frustrated nobody", Mussolini "deeply misunderstood", etc. -or of detailing those "delicate" moments, like his punch-up with then-manager Big Ron Atkinson, which have made him a regular target of the tabloids, Paolo Di Canio-The Autobiography is as controversial and compelling as the man himself. Review Fathers, Sons and Football / Headline Book Publishing:In Fathers, Sons and Football Colin Shindler, Manchester City fan and author of the bestselling Manchester United Ruined My Life, tells the funny, engaging story behind the unique footballing treble of one of Maine Road's favourite families-the Summerbees. Grandfather, father and son each became professional players and Shindler reflects on their careers, family life and the changing face of football and Britain from the 1930s to the present day. Of these three footballing Summerbees, father Mike-England and Man City in his heyday-was by far the biggest star. Enough to have been George Best's best man and in his pomp a robust, rampaging outside right who delighted fans on the pitch and for a time lived a full-on 1960s superstar life off it. Grandfather George was a journeyman player, struggling to scrape out a career amongst the game's also-rans. Mike took the Summerbees into the big time. It was left to son Nicky to carry the mantle into the modern era. The signing of Nicky Summerbee. [+]
seemed to suggest that a second version of the glory years for City was just around the corner. Manchester would soon echo to the sound of rival chants as the two clubs battled for the status of top dog. Only Tina Summerbee had the foresight to dismiss all this as nothing but the fantasies of vainglorious men. Of course, by her own admission, she was a woman who knew nothing about the game. In the end of course Mum knew best, the return of a Summerbee to Maine Road coincided with failure, for both club and player, but the extraordinary Summerbee story goes on and Nicky is in the Premiership again. The book is funny, as you might expect from Shindler, but the underlying subject is approached thoughtfully and intelligently. Even glamorous football families harbour secrets and conflicts, as well as elements of the charmingly idiosyncratic, or surprisingly mundane and while Shindler's love for the game and genuine affection for the Summerbees fill every page, this seems a much more journalistic work than Manchester United Ruined My Life. Clear-sighted observations on the economic realities of playing football for a living; the whims of fans, chairmen and managers; the tensions that arise when fathers and sons share a trade which is also their passion all enrich this family chronicle and mark this book out as worthy successor to Shindler's 1998 bestseller. -Alex Hankin.

Review Mick Fitzgerald: A Jump-jockey's Life (Mainstream Sport) / Mainstream Publishing Co Ltd:Mick Fitzgerald is not just a brave and talented sportsman-he's an eloquent person as well. One of the top National Hunt jockeys in Britain, Fitzgerald can give as good an interview as he can ride a race. His deep-thinking and articulate manner certainly comes across in this paperback that offers a real insight into the life of a leading jump jockey. Every challenge and controversy facing the men and women in the saddle, from dieting and sustaining injuries to incurring the wrath of trainers and fellow jockeys, is discussed here. Fitzgerald has already achieved plenty in his career and his steady rise to the top of his profession continued earlier this year when he was crowned leading jockey at the Cheltenham Festival, the blue riband meeting in the National Hunt world. His four winners at Prestbury Park included the Gold Cup on See More Business and the Queen Mother Champion Chase with Call Equiname. Indeed, this edition has been revised and updated to include the 1998-99 season which was a truly "annus mirabilis" for Fitzgerald who is stable jockey to the Lambourn-based Nicky Henderson, the Queen Mother's trainer. The instantly likeable Irishman already had a Grand National triumph to his name, although he is probably better remembered by non-racing people for his comment to BBC presenter Des Lynam after winning the 1996 Aintree spectacular on Rough Quest: "After that, Des, even sex is an anti-climax," quipped Fitzgerald in the winner's enclosure and the whole nation laughed in unison. But to race experts and enthusiasts, Fitzgerald is an honest and proficient jockey who will give an owner, trainer or punter value for money on any horse he happens to be riding. Yet even someone as experienced and efficient as Fitzgerald can get criticised or feel scared on a horse and here he is not ashamed to discuss such occasions. [+]
With his past well documented, he also talks about the future although he stresses he has no ambitions to be a trainer. You can be sure, though, that whatever he does decide to do after he has hung up his jodhpurs, he will do it with style and sincerity. -Alex Edwards.
