Review Daniel O'Donnell: My Story - The Official Book / Virgin Books:He's the golden boy of easy listening; the silver-tongued son of country-folk. Daniel O'Donnell's blend of laid back sing along has earned him legions of fans in Ireland and increasingly around the world. This autobiography, written in conjunction with Eddie Rowley (author of previous O'Donnell titles Follow Your Dream and Day By Day With Daniel) provides a further gentle amble into O'Donnell territory. Always ready with a smile and handshake for those fans he calls friends, O'Donnell takes this opportunity for an intimate chat with old acquaintances. My Story assumes a certain knowledge of its author. If you're here on the off chance, forget it. Those who know his hometown Kincasslagh, his open house tea invitations and much loved mammy, however, will be glad to catch up on old times. The book opens with O'Donnell himself admitting fandom-in his case of country legend Loretta Lynn. He strives throughout to be "one of the people" and, to be honest, the only thing that suggests otherwise is his need to reiterate the fact!O'Donnell tells us he lives a simple life in comparison to other celebrities. While this doesn't make for edge of the seat entertainment, it is engaging in places with moments of humour (both intentional. [+]
and otherwise). There are rare allusions to out-of-image behaviour-where he sideswipes at the tabloids and council planning departments for example-but otherwise this is wholesome fare to be savoured like your granny's soup. Sandwiched in the middle of the volume are 16- pages of photos, some of which are exclusive, and the mandatory discography is included at the end. Fans should love it and if you can't make it round to Daniel's for a cuppa, relax, pull on your favourite old jumper, cut a slice of cake and settle down with the next best thing instead. -Helen Lamont.

Review The Hero's Journey: Joseph Campbell on His Life and Work / New World Library:Joseph Campbell was arguably the greatest authority on mythology of this century; his The Hero With a Thousand Faces and Masks of God series have had an incalculable effect on readers from students of religion and anthropology to creative artists such as George Lucas, creator of StarWars. The Hero's Journey is the story of Campbell's life and life's work. From his childhood discovery of stories of Native Americans, it follows his burgeoning fascination with mythology. The format of the book is unusual, being largely transcripts from interviews with Campbell for the 1988 TV documentary film, The Hero's Journey: The World of Joseph Campbell, supplemented by extracts from question and answer sessions from his final series of lectures. Initially this might seem off-putting; oral interviews rarely work so well when put raw onto the page. But this book works beautifully, partly, no doubt, because of the care in selecting and editing the transcripts, but mainly because of the sense of excitement that Campbell still displayed in mythology right to the end of his long life (1904-1987). There's a bubbling delight, almost playfulness, which infuses almost every page. Perhaps this is because Campbell's study and scholarship was his own; having abandoned his PhD research, he was never forced into the academic mould "under the supervision of some professor who had his excitement, if he ever had it, a lifetime ago. " Campbell was not only highly respected and an inspiration to all who read his works, he arguably became a living myth himself. This richly illustrated book, filled throughout with fascinating observations and deep insights, will become part of the canon of that mythology. [+]
