Review Cotillion: Complete & Unabridged / Chivers Audio Books:Young Kitty Charing stands to inherit a vast fortune from her irascible great-uncle Matthew-provided she marries one of her cousins. Kitty is not wholly adverse to the plan, if the right nephew proposes. Unfortunately, Kitty has set her heart on Jack Westruther, a confirmed rake, who seems to have no inclination to marry her anytime soon. In an effort to make Jack jealous, and to see a little more of the world than her isolated life on her great-uncle's estate has afforded her, Kitty devises a plan. She convinces yet another of her cousins, the honourable Freddy Standen, to pretend to be engaged to her. Her plan would bring her to London on a visit to Freddy's family and (hopefully) render the elusive Mr Westruther madly jealous. Thus begins Cotillion, arguably the funniest, most charming of Georgette Heyer's many delightful Regency romances. No sooner does Kitty arrive in London than she becomes embroiled in the romantic difficulties of several new acquaintances. Kitty's French cousin, Camille, a professional gambler, has won the heart of her new friend, Olivia-who also happens to be the object of Jack Westruther's dishonourable intentions. Meanwhile, Kitty's doltish cousin Lord Dolphinton has fallen in love with a merchant's daughter who is embattled with his mother and needs his help. [+]
Finally, there is Kitty herself, who begins to wonder if the dandified Freddy might not be the man for her after all. As in all of Georgette Heyer's books, Cotillion transcends genre-it is, quite simply, wonderful literature. Historically accurate down to the finest details of dress, deportment and speech, Heyer was also a master at creating unforgettable, comic characters; and Kitty Charing and Freddy Standen stand out as one of her most charming romantic duos ever. -Amazon. com.

Review Scarlet Feather (Tape) / Orion:Kate Binchy's cosy tones as she begins this reading belie unexpected turns in the fate of Scarlet Feather, Tom Feather and Cathy Scarlet's catering business. Tom's relationship with beautiful, would-be model Marcella, is more off than on, and Cathy's marriage to Neil, ambitious civil rights lawyer, prickles as it sways between occasional help and undermining indifference. Catering successes and failures run parallel to family stresses and strains of a disapproving mother-in-law, unacceptable behaviour of comic cut-out though imperceptibly endearing nine-year-old twins, Simon and Maud, the children of Hannah's distrait brother and his somewhat deranged wife, and various secret lives of gambling, stealing, illegitimacy. By immersing themselves in the love and kindness of Cathy and her parents, Muttie and Lizzie, the twins improve considerably but from information innocently blurted out of the mouths of these babes into the ears of their much older and very light-fingered brother, Walter, comes disaster and near ruin. Thanks to Aunt Geraldine whose wealth, Cathy comes to realise, has accrued from her many affairs with mostly married men who love to compensate her in kind, Scarlet Feather thrives once more and emotional relationships are reassessed. Vibrant interpretation and pertinent abridgement of this latest novel from the fabulous Maeve Binchy. -Lyn Took. Running time six hours.

Review Return Journey (Tape) / Orion:The Return Journey is a collection of 14 short stories of life, love and learning that enables the most harried reader to enjoy a well-told tale in its entirety before checking on the kids or sorting the washing. In the tradition of Binchy's classic tales Circle of Friends and Tara Road, this consummate summer beach book introduces readers not to models of literary and romantic indefectibility, but to people just like us, who lose their car keys and have bad hair days. The title story paints a portrait of the embattled relationship between a mother who left her home in Dunglass, Ireland, and her daughter, who has travelled to Ireland to find her history and finds love, as well. Through weekly correspondence, mother and daughter repair the damage to their relationship, laying to rest ghosts of an earlier mother-daughter relationship gone irrevocably wrong. Binchy's Victor and St. Valentine renews faith that truly romantic men do exist and are often overlooked, their motives suspect in an increasingly self-reliant world. No one can accuse Binchy of overtelling a tale; she has perfected the art of leading her readers to the verge and then allowing them to loose their imaginations as they see fit. -Alison Trinkle -This text refers to the mass market paperback edition of this title.

Review Pride and Prejudice / Languages & Literature, Inc.:Elizabeth Bennet is the perfect Austen heroine: intelligent, generous, sensible, incapable of jealousy or any other major sin. That makes her sound like an insufferable goody-goody, but the truth is she's a completely hip character who ,if provoked, is not above skewering her antagonist with a piece of her exceptionally sharp, yet always polite, 18th-century wit. The real point of the book though, the critical question which will keep you fixated throughout, is: will Elizabeth and Mr Darcy hook up? Read this genuine all-time classic and discover the answer while enjoying a story that has charmed generation after generation.
