Review The First-Time Investor: The Complete Guide to Buying, Owning and Selling Shares (Financial Times Series) / Financial Times/ Prentice Hall:As its title suggests, this is a complete book of investing for the novice. First Time Investor can also serve as a useful handbook for knowledgeable investors who want to look up a fact or two. The book sets off by describing how the stock market works, the types of advice available to newcomers and an overview of collective investments such as unit or investment trusts. Harrison provides an overview of investing in tax-saving individual savings accounts, but it is in the second half of the book where the topic turns to picking shares that it gets really interesting. Many investors are overly focused on selecting the best few shares. Harrison starts at the top and spends considerable time on asset allocation-making sure your portfolio has the right degree of balance. Her sections dealing with share selection focus on looking at the company itself and then how the market values the company's shares. She also covers market cycles and how to deal with downturns in the market. She then turns to the more practical aspects of buying and selling shares before finishing with a recommendation to keep track of your investments and how exactly to do it. As one of the most experienced writers on personal finance on the scene today, Debbie Harrison is the ideal person to guide you through the subject. [+]
She writes regularly in the Financial Times and has authored several books on pensions and financial planning. The 290 pages of First Time Investor offer a compendium of information about all aspects of investing. -Bruce McWilliams.

Review Tempered Radicals: How People Use Difference to Inspire Change at Work / Harvard Business School Press:Tempered Radicals-they may not sound like the type of people who will start revolutions or topple corrupt governments, but in the corporate world it is often these quiet change advocates that get the ball rolling and the policies changing. In her thoughtful study of employees whose differences place them outside the mainstream organisational culture, Meyerson uses this term for those who want to succeed in their organisations without compromising their ideological beliefs and personal lives. People who hope to "fit in without selling out" operate on a fault line, says Meyerson. While contributing to their companies' success, they represent agendas or differences that are often at odds with the dominant culture. This can involve their social identities, such as race, gender, or sexual orientation, or their philosophical values and beliefs, such as a concern for social justice, environmental sustainability or family-friendly working conditions. They are not radicals in the sense that they want to enact a marked departure from the traditional, but tempered radicals in that they both challenge and uphold the status quo, working "within systems, not against them". Seeking to map out the space between conformity and extreme radicalism, Meyerson conducted in-depth interviews with almost 200 people in three very different organisations. The result is an insightful look at the way these people bring about change, how to leverage small wins and how to organise collective action. Tempered Radicals is sure to be a beacon of encouraging light for those who want to make a difference from within and an inspiration to those who might have assumed that changing one's environment meant changing one's job. -S Ketchum.
