Review Meetings with Remarkable Men: Meetings with Remarkable Men 2nd Series (Arkana) / Penguin Books Ltd:Right around the turn of the 20th century, G. I. Gurdjieff initiated a group of spiritual adventurers called the "Seekers of Truth". These intrepid intellectuals of every stripe criss-crossed Africa and Asia in search of the hidden mysteries of antiquity. In Meetings with Remarkable Men, Gurdjieff narrates their exploits while drawing portraits of these extraordinary figures (including one woman and a dog). Half travel journal, half autobiography, Meetings with Remarkable Men begins with Gurdieff's childhood, when he finds his book learning at odds with paranormal events that were self-evidently real but inexplicable through modern science. Later he discovers a map of "pre-sands Egypt" and evidence of the Sarmound Brotherhood, alleged keepers of ancient wisdom dating back four-and-a-half millennia. He climbs the Himalayas, follows the Nile, and is led blindfolded to a mysterious monastery. In his encounters with dervishes, monks and fakirs, Gurdjieff recovers the wisdom he seeks, by comparison with which European understanding, he says, is backwards and barbaric. A controversial figure in his time, Gurdjieff inspired deep love and loyalty in his pupils and ridicule from sceptics. [+]
At the bookends of Meetings with Remarkable Men, Gurdjieff suggests the value of blurring the line between allegory and straight reporting. But then what exactly is Meetings with Remarkable Men? You be the judge. -Brian Bruya.

Review The Justice Game / Vintage:As a young Australian barrister, Robertson found himself involved in the Oz trial; a frothingly moralistic judge went to some lengths to jail three editors of an underground magazine, and was duly humiliated on appeal. Success leads to opportunity; Robertson has found himself at the heart of a sequence of crucial freedom of expression trials-the Gay Newsblasphemy trial, the attempt to bust the National theatre over a play in which male rape took place, the arrest of a painter whose chosen subject was bank notes. His account of his career concentrates on these, and on his own entire brilliance in them; he is not a modest man, nor is there any particular reason why he should be, especially given how sharp and witty his accounts are. Robertson has also been involved in other causes cèlebres-he knows all about the Michael X case, and a variety of other capital cases in the Caribbean, and is fascinating on the Matrix Churchill case and the various libel actions around the "cash for questions" sleaze row. Anyone interested in the issues is going to find this a useful book-but the average intelligent reader is going to find the account of courtroom battles a guilty pleasure in itself. -Roz Kaveney.

Review Slaying the Dragon: How to Turn Your Small Steps to Great Feats / Harpercollins:Michael Johnson is known as the fastest man in the world. He is famous for accomplishing something that no other runner has ever done: in 1996 he won Olympic gold medals in both the 200m and 400m. This accomplishment is the climax of Johnson's career so far and closes this autobiography. Chronicalling his life as an athlete from his college days at Baylor University, it provides a veritable photo gallery of family and athletics memorabilia. However, Johnson's work bears little further resemblance to other works of this genre. Moreover, the subtitle "How to turn your small steps into great feats" is the real key to his book. In each chapter Johnson outlines the motivation and discipline behind his athletic career. By describing his physical and mental self-discipline towards training, preparation for races and the events themselves, he gives the reader an insight into how he has achieved his successes. He shares his winning techniques and advises that identification of our own fears and goals combined with his "Training tips" can be applied in every aspect of life, whether this be athletics, work or persevering with a diet. Johnson also relies on quotations from William Shakespeare, Dr. [+]
Martin Luther King Jr. and Stevie Wonder to affirm his advice. Unlike him, we may not wear a pair of gold Nike running spikes every day, but Johnson is keen to apply his success to both our personal and professional lives. -Alison Taylor.
