Review Farrar Straus Giroux / My Brother Publication date: 1997-10
Dewey code: 813
Price: £10.61

Review My Brother / Farrar Straus Giroux:

In 1995 Jamaica Kincaid found out that her brother Devon was dying of AIDS in Antigua. Although she hardly knew him-in fact, she had distanced herself from her family after departing the island as a teenager-she soon returned and began visiting him in the hospital. My Brother is a record of this precarious, overdue rapprochement. More to the point, though, it is a rumination on family, grief, language and the almost impenetrable mystery that each person represents to others. Kincaid's prose is as musical and evocative as ever, and given the subject matter, this memoir is often surprisingly funny. When her mother denies ever having made a mistake while raising her children, for example, the author notes: "Even now, years later, I am still surprised by this, because I spend a good part of my day on my knees in apology to my own children. ".

Review John Murray Publishers Ltd / Radclyffe Hall: A Woman Called John Publication date: 1997-06-26
Price: £25.00

Review Radclyffe Hall: A Woman Called John / John Murray Publishers Ltd:

She's best known as the author of The Well of Loneliness, "the one lesbian novel everyone has heard of", feminist scholar Sally Cline wittily remarks. But in her lifetime (1880-1943), Radclyffe Hall was a popular writer who deliberately courted controversy with her fifth novel, banned as obscene in 1928 after one of the 20th century's most notorious literary trials. Cline devotes valuable critical attention to Hall's other books, and to a flamboyant personal life (a virtual who's who of homosexual Britain) that was at odds with her political and religious conservatism.

Publication date: 1999-08-05
RRP: £7.99

Review Love Undetectable: Reflections on Friendship, Sex and Survival / Vintage:

With his first book Virtually Normal, Andrew Sullivan gained instant, easy notoriety-here at last was a gay Republican who forced wincing Republicans to listen to gay politics, and who forced smouldering queer activists to endure his conservative philosophising. Now he's back with a collection of three essays, Love Undetectable, but his tactics are different. While still "soapboxing" on occasion, Sullivan's writing here is painfully honest, dealing with his HIV-positive status, his Catholicism, his personal relationships and even some strange spiritual manifestations, with all the alacrity of an Oprah guest. Sullivan's strength is his ability to ask the right questions-about the impact of the drug cocktails which have made AIDS a long-term living condition for many, about the roots of homosexuality and about the role of friendship rather than love. Some of his arguments are stimulating, but the book drifts uncertainly into a naive discovery of Freud as the great explainer of homosexuality, often replacing sustained argument with commonsensical posturing ("Find me a honest homosexual who hasn't. ") Ultimately, however, whatever its limitations (most notably its tendency to read US white gay men as the gamut of queer possibility), Love Undetectable at least forces debate in what has become one of the most complacent of communities. -Alan Stewart.

Review Pan Books / Family Outing: A Guide to the Coming-out Process for Gays, Lesbians and Their Families Publication date: 1999-06-25
Dewey code: 305
RRP: £6.99
Price: £2.41

Review Family Outing: A Guide to the Coming-out Process for Gays, Lesbians and Their Families / Pan Books:

Family Outing is two books in one: a memoir of Chastity Bono's experience coming out as a lesbian to her famous parents and a look at the difficulties and triumphs that are part of every uncloseted homosexual's family life, with narratives drawn from interviews with members of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). Sometimes the two projects work against each other, but for the most part, Bono is right in assuming that her story reflects something larger in the culture and that others' stories, in turn, bear on her own experience. Readers skimming for intimate details about the mother-daughter conflict between Cher and Chastity won't be disappointed by Bono's sensitively written account. For a long time, Cher overlooked the troubling evidence of her daughter's emerging sexual identity: "Instead, she focused on superficial issues that bothered her: my short hair, my mannish clothes, my weight. " Their relationship deteriorated and it was Sonny to whom Chastity eventually confided; ironically, the father who offered immediate, warm acceptance of his daughter's lesbianism would later sponsor the "1996 Defense of Marriage Act" in the US House of Representatives. - Regina Marler, Amazon. com.
