Review Hacker Attack / John Wiley & Sons:Hacker Attack is aimed at PC enthusiasts rather than businesses or paranoids, and the emphasis is firmly on home PCs running Windows. Mansfield writes with an easy, friendly style designed to make technical issues seem straightforward, but he does tend to reduce issues to the black and white of tabloid journalism with a similar cavalier attitude to providing provenance for his gaudier "facts". This isn't necessarily a bad thing as Hacker Attack is relentlessly practical. It covers the more colourful hacker history including phone phreaking, but on the other hand it doesn't pretend it's all done with code-there's a lot on social engineering, straightforward fraud, incompetence and wishful thinking as a substitute for security here. His heart, though, is firmly in cryptography. The largest section of the book deals with cryptographic approaches to privacy, secrecy and security and it's here you will find the most actual code, including lots of his own. This is fun. The risks to data, though, come from system penetration whether it comes via social engineering, trojans, viruses or whatever. In this area Mansfield appears to have been blinded by Microsoft. For instance, the simplest way to prevent script-based e-mail virus attacks in Windows is to ditch Outlook and use almost any other e-mail program. [+]
In page after page of suggested fixes this one is ignored despite being the only effective solution. Nevertheless, Hacker Attack makes a technical subject both accessible and fun. Even better, if you put its suggestions into effect your system will be a great deal more secure. -Steve Patient.

Review Living on the Fault Line: Managing for Shareholder Value in the Age of the Internet / Capstone:Geoffrey Moore's first two books, Crossing the Chasm and Inside the Tornado, were gospel to a generation of high-tech managers. The challenge those books addressed was how to market and sell according to what he called the "Technology Adoption Life Cycle". In Living on the Fault Line, Moore takes his message to a very different group of execs, those who have never had to worry about marketing technology, but who now face the biggest and most disruptive technology life cycle of all-the Internet. Moore contends that the Internet has changed everything-and he means it. As many companies are now discovering, market share is worth more than earnings; virtual integration trumps vertical integration; and the IT department, once relegated to a stuffy back office, is no longer "about the business-it is the business". The best proxy of a company's success? Try its stock price. Moore writes, "Stock price is in effect an information system about competitive advantage, it can help you sort through which markets to attack, which strategies to pursue, which partners to endorse and which tactics to execute. Capital, in other words, flows to competitive advantage and abandons competitive disadvantage. " For some, Moore's prescriptions may seem over the top. But those grappling for a handhold on the Internet economy will find much to ponder here. [+]
For example, managers faced with a scarcity of time and resources will find his analysis of core and context a powerful prism to manage by. He defines "core" as activities that differentiate a company in the marketplace and thereby drive its stock price. "Context" is simply everything else the company already does. His suggestion-assign your best people to the core and outsource as much of the context as possible. If you've enjoyed Moore's previous work, you'll find Living on the Fault Line a must. If you've never read Moore before, get this on your bookshelf before your competition does. Engaging and highly readable, this one's a keeper. -Harry C Edwards, Amazon. com.

Review Techgnosis: Myth, Magic and Mysticism in the Age of Information (Five Star Paperback) / Serpent's Tail:The gap between the technological worldview and a mystical outlook may not be as great as it seems. In Techgnosis Erik Davis takes a look at modern information technology-as well as much previous technology-to reveal how it is often rooted in spiritual and mystical beliefs. He furthermore explores how those who embrace new technological advances often do so with expectations stemming from religious sensibilities. Davis compares and contrasts the scientific attitude that we can know reality through technology with the Gnostic philosophy of developing ultimate understanding. The book comes in reasonably organised chapters but there's also a strong stream-of-consciousness component to Davis's writing as it moves back and forth across time and space to make connections. For example, one argument may run from information theory to the nebulous nature of Gnosticism to the philosophical problem of evil-all in just a few pages. But rather than being chaotic the result is a lively interplay of wide-ranging ideas. The style is equally lively and generally engaging even if it sometimes strays into the hip. Davis succeeds in revealing the spiritual side of what some may regard as cold technological thought. -Elizabeth Lewis.
