Review Aristocrats: Caroline, Emily, Louisa and Sarah Lennox, 1750-1832 / HarperCollins Audio:

Alive with the details of upper-class life in the 1700s, and sparkling with extracts from the letters of Caroline, Emily, Louisa and Sarah Lennox and their offspring, Aristocrats: The Illustrated Companion to the Television Series takes the reader on a Grand Tour of their 18th-century experience. Stella Tillyard's completely new text (the series Aristocrats is based on her highly acclaimed book of the same name), breathes intelligence and accessibility. Divided into themed chapters: Beginnings and Marriages; Town Life; Country Life; Travel and Endings, Aristocrats is gorgeously illustrated with informatively captioned paintings, photos of artefacts and stills from the television series. Helpfully, the book kicks off with a Dramatis Personae section, which explains who everyone is, tells us how they relate to each other, what they were like and fits them snugly into their context like the elegant, idiosyncratic pieces of a lavish three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle. Throughout, Tillyard's affectionately vivid prose combines with the stunning illustrations to recreate the opulence in which the Lennox sisters lived, loved, married, took lovers, raised children, survived scandals, played at architecture and design, and lived high politics. A book which combines gossip, art and history to terrific effect. Buy it even if you've read Tillyard's original book. Actually-buy two copies. Keep one and give one to someone you love as a present. -Lisa Gee.

Review Out of the Frying Pan: Scenes from My Life / HarperCollins Audio:

When The Naked Chef was crawling around in his birthday suit, Keith Floyd was the undisputed king of cookery programmes. But his culinary career hasn't always flowed as smoothly as the wine he was famous for downing. Hence the title of his autobiography: Out Of The Frying Pan. In the early 80s, following the collapse of another restaurant, Floyd found himself yet again up Jacob's Creek without a glass. "I was 40 years old, virtually bankrupt, a middle-aged man with a brilliant future behind me. " Then out of the blue Floyd received a call from a BBC producer asking if he wanted to make a programme about cooking fish. Floyd's first TV series was such a surprising success that his producer told him: "I've created a monster and it's time to load the gun with silver bullets. " In hindsight, after 16 TV series, 18 books, three marriages, one receivership and countless kiss-and-tell stories later, Floyd suggests that he may well have fired the gun himself. "If I knew than what I know now, I might have never have made 'Floyd on Fish'. " With his programmes still being shown regularly around the world, his many thousands of fans will be pleased that he did. [+]
Now the ex-restaurateur has proved himself to be a formidable raconteur. Out Of The Frying Pan gives a frank and colourful account of a turbulent life lived to the full and recalls a career as chequered as a pair of chef's trousers. Engaging and evocative, this life story will leave readers hungry for more. -Christopher Kelly.

Review Mankind: Have a Nice Day! - A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks / HarperCollins Audio:

Frankly, this literary critic didn't expect Mick Foley's memoir of his life as Mankind (and his other wrestling personas, Cactus Jack and Dude Love) to hit No. 1 on Amazon. com's hardcover non-fiction best-seller list in its first literary bout. Do we really need 500-plus pages of Foley's boasts? Yes. Foley gives his all for his calling and he burns to tell his adventures. Take the famous tale of how he lost most of his ear (the bloody result is depicted in the 16-page, colour photo section). It was in his 1994 bouts with Vader (Leon White), after getting a broken nose, a dislocated jaw and 21 stitches in the first match, that Foley did his "hangman" routine, wherein he catches his neck between the second and third ropes and spins them into a twist: "The end result is the illusion of a man being hanged by his neck while his body kicks and writhes in an attempt to get out. the man actually is hanging by his neck and the body really does kick and writhe in an attempt to get out". [+]
Unfortunately, in the prior match, Too Cold Scorpio had had the officials tighten the ropes so Foley tore off his ear to avoid death by strangulation, like "a fox that chews off its paw to escape a trap". Foley also wrestles on 10,000-thumbtack mats with barbed-wire ropes and C-4 explosives and earns the ultimate compliment: "The fans really like the way you bleed". Many fans also like the way his gory story reads. -Tim Appelo, Amazon. com Frankly, this literary critic didn't expect Mick Foley's memoir of his life as Mankind (and his other wrestling personas, Cactus Jack and Dude Love) to hit No. 1 on Amazon's hardcover non- fiction bestseller list in its first literary bout. Review Elizabeth and Mary: Cousins, Rivals, Queens / HarperCollins Audio:

Jane Dunn's double biography Elizabeth and Mary takes as its rich and explosive subject matter the ultimately fatal relationship between Queen Elizabeth I of England and her cousin Mary, Queen of Scots. Throughout much of the second half of the 16th century, these two women found themselves queens of their kingdoms and locked in a battle for possession of the British Isles, which only ended with Mary's eventual downfall and execution at Elizabeth's hands in 1586. As Dunn points out in her meticulous and compelling recreation of the complex relationship between the two women, "from that one act of regicide, a queen killing a fellow queen, has spun a mythology of justification, romance, accusation, and blame that retains its force right to the present day. " Her approach attempts to avoid myth and romance and understand the complex bond that existed between the two women. Elizabeth, the apparent victor, "was haunted by a deep-rooted insecurity as to her own legitimacy", while Mary was pursued by claims of sexual excess and immersion in murderous plots against husbands and enemies, variously seen as "a wronged Madonna or a murderous jezebel. " Dunn elegantly follows the ups and downs of both monarchs as they strive for political power. Mary's tumultuous reign as Queen of Scotland is particularly well handled, as is Elizabeth's agonised vacillation over her decision to execute Mary. In the end, death triumphed over both, and ensured that each was "elevated to an idealised majesty" for very different reasons. Dunn has marshalled an impressive body of evidence that never overwhelms this psychologically nuanced account of these two remarkable women. -Jerry Brotton.
