Review Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire / HarperCollins Audio:

Georgiana Spencer was, in a sense, an 18th-century "It Girl". She came from one of England's richest and most landed families, and married into another. She was, beautiful, sensitive, and extravagant. Acquainted fairly young with Charles James Fox, her move from parties to Parties led her to become the intimate of ministers and princes, and she canvassed assiduously for the Whig cause, most famously in the Westminster election of 1784. By turns she was caricatured and fawned on by the press, and she provided the inspiration for Lady Teazle in Sheridan's School For Scandal. But, luckily for her biographer, she also had weaknesses that were to taint her life. As gin gripped the masses, so gambling thralled the aristocracy. By 1784 Georgiana owed "many, many, many thousands", and the creditors she acquired dogged her until her death, but the sterility of her marriage meant that she never came close to disclosing the magnitude of her debts. Amanda Foreman describes astutely the mess that was personal relationships for the aristocratic subculture (Georgiana and the Duke engaged for many years in a ménage à trois with Lady Elizabeth Fraser, who inveigled her way into his bed and her heart). She is, by her own admission, a little in love with her subject, which can lead to occasional lapses of perspective, but generally it adds zest to a narrative built on, rather than burdened by, scholarship, that is at once accessible and learned. An impressive debut, in every sense. -David Vincent.

Review Hodder & Stoughton Ltd / Trowel and Error Publication date: 2003-07-07
Dewey code: 790
RRP: £10.00
Price: £1.29

Review Trowel and Error / Hodder & Stoughton Ltd:

Trowel and Error is described as a "touch of the memoirs" by the author. Alan Titchmarsh is now a national institution; with his characteristic good humour and charm, he is unquestionably the country's number-one television gardener and presenter with even an unlikely reputation as a sex symbol (a reputation that started as a joke). Apart from his considerable gardening acumen, of course, he has also proved to be a novelist of genuine ability, with such books as Mr MacGregor and Animal Instincts. Communication is, needles to say, his special skill, and it was to be expected that Trowel and Error (the groan-inducing pun is all part of the Titchmarsh armoury), would be revealing and evocative. Titchmarsh announced to school friends of the age of 10 that he would be the next Percy Thrower, although those ambitions were, he tells us, fudged in some uncomfortable encounters with the opposite sex (Titchmarsh always picked girls who were taller than him, and the relationships didn't last). In fact his Yorkshire childhood in the 1950s is one of the most purely enjoyable parts of the book, with his stamping ground of Ilkley Moor the seat of his passionate love for nature. His first experiences as a gardener at the Royal Botanical Garden at Kew are full of the kind of quirky incident that makes his writing appealing. As his fame grew, Titchmarsh began rubbing shoulders with the likes of Nelson Mandela Julia Roberts and the Queen, and such encounters are highly diverting. Many a book conceals a rampant ego behind an "aw, shucks" manner, but Titchmarsh comes across as a genuinely nice guy-one who is self-deprecating. This is a truly engaging (and often very funny) autobiography. [+]

Review BBC Audiobooks Ltd / And June Whitfield Publication date: 2000-11-06
Dewey code: 791
RRP: £11.00

Review And June Whitfield / BBC Audiobooks Ltd:

For half a century, June Whitfield has provided the female voices for a galaxy of famous comedians: hence the odd title of her enjoyable autobiography. She had the blessing of an ideal start: her adored parents-both am-dram fanatics-gave her every encouragement to develop the comic gifts which have kept her happily and gainfully employed ever since she left Rada in 1944. The BBC has been her main employer: for them she played Eth opposite Jimmy Edwards in The Glums, and regularly starred in Take It From Here and The News Huddlines (Roy Hudd christened her The Comic's Tart). More recently she played Miss Marple in the Agatha Christie dramatisations and figured prominently in the TV smash-hit Absolutely Fabulous. The owner of an OBE, she has twice been the subject of This Is Your Life, but such accolades have never seduced her away from the greasepaint: playing in both pantos and straight theatre-taking key roles like Mrs Malaprop in Sheridan's The Rivals-has always remained her metier. Julian Clary is one of her favourite co-stars: "Now there's a challenge!" he once told her, when explaining that her job, as the wife of the Governor of the Bank of England, was to seduce Clary's camp jailer. Listening to her tales, one senses that the warmth of her personality must bring out the best in everyone she works with; she positively radiates affection. "There's one more panto in you", the chief electrician at Wimbledon Theatre told sprightly septuagenarian recently. She reports this diffidently, but hopes he is right. -Betty Tadman.

Review Longitude / HarperCollins Audio:

The thorniest scientific problem of the 18th century was how to determine longitude. Many thousands of lives had been lost at sea over the centuries due to the inability to determine an east-west position. This is the engrossing story of the clockmaker, John "Longitude" Harrison, who solved the problem that Newton and Galileo had failed to conquer, yet claimed only half the promised rich reward. -Amazon. com.
