Review A History of Britain: At the Edge of the World? - 3000 BC-AD 1603 Vol 1 (BBC Radio Collection) / BBC Audiobooks Ltd:What do you get when you combine the resources and ethos of the BBC with the literary panache of one of the world's best narrative historians? The answer is Simon Schama's History of Britain, the first volume of which accompanies the BBC television series of the same name. In a beautifully written and thoughtfully crafted book, studded with striking portraits, pictures and maps, Schama, the bestselling author of books on European cultural history such as The Embarrassment of Riches and Citizens, as well as 1999's Rembrandt's Eyes, has managed to be both conventional and provocative. He tells the official version of Britain's island story-from Roman Britain, through the Norman conquest, the struggles of the Henrys and Richards with their bolshie barons and cautious clerics, Edward I and the subjugation of Wales, King Death (the plague), and on to the Henrician reformation, before closing with the remarkable reign of the virgin queen, Elizabeth I. While sticking to a script familiar to anyone who sat up and listened in history lessons at school, Schama brings it all alive, with memorable prose-Simon de Montfort's rebel parliament is described as inaugurating the "union between patriotism and insubordination"; with Henry VIII, Schama says, "you could practically smell the testosterone". And with fine sensitivity too, particularly on the symbolism of buildings, memorials, language and ceremonies, and on the complex relations between England and her Celtic and Catholic neighbours. If history must have gloss, then let it be written and presented like this. -Miles Taylor.

Review In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great / BBC Books:More than two millennia ago, Alexander the Great changed the course of human history in an astonishingly short time: He acceded to the throne of Macedon at the age of just 20, and by the time he was 30 he had conquered the known world. At 32 he was dead. His 22,000-mile journey to India and back opened up connections between the East and West, and even today its traces can be found throughout Asia- in cultures, legends, place names and traditions. Filmmaker and journalist Michael Wood has retraced Alexander's journey-by car, horse, camel, boat and even on foot- resulting in the engaging In the Footsteps of Alexander. (He travelled with a small, hardy film crew, and together they also produced a PBS documentary of the same name. ) Wood's text vividly brings Alexander's times to life, as he mixes accounts of his own adventures and encounters with the story of Alexander's journey. Accompanying the text is a well-chosen assortment of maps, photographs and reproductions of artwork and artefacts. Alexander aficionados and neophytes alike will find much to inform and delight them in this handsome volume.

Review Bayeux Tapestry (BBC Radio Collection) / BBC Audiobooks Ltd:The audio book dramatisation The Bayeux Tapestry is a contrivance to put us on location with the hoi polloi during events in 1064, leading up to the 1066 Battle of Hastings. Drawn from images on the embroidered masterpiece-and history as we know it-conjecture mingles with reality through developments which finish in bloody massacre. Confrontation emanated from the accession of Harold, Duke of Wessex to the English throne, despite accord with Edward the Confessor's dying wish that William Duke of Normandy should be his heir. Seeking retribution, ("All offers of help were not enough for the onslaught he had in mind"), William sailed to England and headed his troops towards Hastings, where battle commenced and eventually concluded with Harold's death by an arrow shot to the eye. In implied war correspondent style, the inapt and irksome voice of Kirsty Wark peppers this cross hatch of self-conscious poetry and overblown prose. As the royal dukes ponder their lot, assorted commoners of the day discourse on fear, heroism and grief, and determine "History is the powerful frightening the weak," declaring "God can't give a toss. " A colloquialism surely more 21st than 11th century? (Running time 2hrs 15 mins) -Lyn Took.
