Review Mansfield Park (Classic fiction) / Naxos AudioBooks:

The Mansfield Park of the title, a magnificent, idyllic estate which is home to the wealthy Bertram family, stands as a bastion of English tradition and stability. The novel's heroine, Fanny Price, is a "poor relation" living with the Bertrams, acutely conscious of her inferior status and yet daring to love their son Edmund-but from afar. However, with five marriageable young people on the premises, the peace at Mansfield cannot last. Courtships, entertainments and intrigues throw the place into turmoil, and Fanny finds herself unwillingly competing with a dazzlingly witty and lovely rival. As critic Margaret Drabble has pointed out, the house becomes "full of the energies of discord-sibling rivalry, greed, ambition, illicit sexual passion, and vanity," and the novel becomes ever more engrossing as it builds to Mansfield's final scandal and, finally, a satisfying conclusion. Unique in its moral design and brilliant interplay of the forces of tradition and change, Mansfield Park was the first novel of Jane Austen's maturity, and the first in which the author turned her unerring eye on the concerns of English society at a time of great upheaval.

Review This United State (Macmillan Audio Book) / Macmillan Audio Books:

The inherent danger in the regular, prolific output of a writer like Forbes is, of course, a loss of freshness in ideas and characterisation. But Forbes takes measures to deal with this: each new book strikes out in an unfamiliar direction, and if his narratives are sometimes overly ambitious, the sheer storytelling verve carries the reader through. This 25th book has a prophetic edge: Forbes deals with the results of the assassination of the Prime Minister, leaving the island state-Britain-in mortal danger. His protagonist, Paula Grey, saves an important American from a brutal attempt on his life, which seems to be part of a strategy by a giant power to absorb Britain into its own system. And the country is soon under threat from legions of enemies, including the malign Jake Ronstadt and his troop of henchmen. The narrative hurtles towards a dramatic climax on Romney Marsh as an invading naval task force approaches Britain. This is the kind of labyrinthine plot in which a moment's inattention on the part of the reader will leave them adrift. But Forbes more than repays our close attention, and even if some of the characters here are conventionally drawn, there's no denying the ambition and skill. -Barry Forshaw.

Review The Blind Assassin (Audio Cassette) / HarperCollins Audio:

"It's loss and regret and misery and yearning that drive the story forward", writes Margaret Atwood, towards the end of her impressive and complex new novel, The Blind Assassin. It's a melancholic account of why writers write-and readers read-and one that frames the different lives told through this book. The Blind Assassin is (at least) two novels. At the end of her life, Iris Griffen takes up her pen to record the secret history of her family, the romantic melodrama of its decline and fall between the two world wars. Conjuring a world of prosperity and misery, marriage and loneliness, the central enigma of Iris's tale is the death of her sister, Laura Chase, who "drove a car off a bridge" at the end of the Second World War. Suicide or accident? The story gradually unfolds, interspersed with sketches of Iris's present-day life-confined by age and ill-health-and a second novel, The Blind Assassin by Laura Chase. Allowing a glimpse into a clandestine love affair between a privileged young woman and a radical "agitator" on the run, this version of The Blind Assassin is an overt act of seduction: the exchange of sex and story about an imaginary world of Sakiel-Norn (a play with the potential, and convention, of fantasy and sci-fi). With the intelligence, subtlety and remarkable characterisation associated with Atwood's writing (from her first novel, The Edible Woman through to the best-selling Alias Grace), these two stories play with one another-sustaining an uncertainty about who has done what to whom and why to the very end of this compelling book. -Vicky Lebeau This review refers to the hardcover edition of this title.
