Review Congo / Random House Audiobooks:

If you saw the 1995 film adaptation of this Crichton thriller, somebody owes you an apology. While you're waiting for that to happen, try reading the vastly more intelligent novel on which the movie was based. The broad lines of the plot remain the same: A research team deep in the jungle disappears after a mysterious and grisly gorilla attack. A subsequent team, including a sign-language-speaking simian named Amy, follows the original team's tracks only to be subjected to more mysterious and grisly gorilla attacks. If you can look past the breathless treatment of 80s' technology, like voice-recognition software and 256K RAM modules (the book was written in 1980), you'll find the same smart use of science and edge-of-your-seat suspense shared by Crichton's other work. -Paul Hughes, Amazon. com.

Review Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing: Complete & Unabridged (Radio Collection) / BBC Audiobooks Ltd:

Passed on from babysitters to their young charges, from big sisters to little brothers and from parents to children, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and its cousins (Superfudge, Fudge-a-mania, and Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great) have entertained children since they first appeared in the early 1970s. The books follow Peter Hatcher, his little brother Fudgie, baby sister Tootsie, their neighbour Sheila Tubman, and various pets and minor characters through New York City and on treks to suburbs and camps. Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing is the first of these entertaining yarns. Peter, because he's the oldest, must deal with Fudgie's disgusting cuteness, his constant meddling with Peter's stuff, and other grave offences, one of which is almost too much to bear. All these incidents are presented with the unfailing ear and big-hearted humour of the masterful Judy Blume. Though some of her books for older kids have aroused controversy, the Hatcher brothers and their adventures remain above the fray, where they belong. (Peter's in fourth grade, so the book is suitable for children ages 8 and older. ).

Review Jeeves in the Offing / Penguin Audiobooks:

Written in 1960, Jeeves In The Offing finds PG Wodehouse's best-loved characters on as fine form as ever. With Jeeves on holiday, Bertie Wooster accepts an invitation to Brinkley Court, where he hopes to pass a few pleasant days. However, there is little time to relax when the visit turns out to involve Bertie's ex-headmaster, a former fiancée, an eccentric playboy, and a purloined cow-shaped creamer. Bertie struggles to master the situation, but soon enough he needs to call for the assistance of his butler. The supremely competent Jeeves saves the day as usual, able to assess any situation in a moment and dispense the appropriate advice. He guides his employer safely through numerous trials, with a great deal of humour derived from the very triviality of the obstacles which must be overcome, as well as the comic ways in which the difficulties are resolved. Simon Callow's reading captures the characters' nuances perfectly-the Butler's "Very good, sir" and "Indeed, sir" (for example) have just the right measure of professional respectfulness, studied disinterest, and a slightly superior air. As with the other cassettes in the Penguin series, Jeeves In The Offing provides a wonderful rendition of Wodehouse's expertly-crafted material. -John Oates.

Review Chocolat / Hodder & Stoughton Audio Books:

I hear our M'sieur le Curé already has it in for you. Does he know you're a witch? Lansquenet-sous-Tannes-"a blip on the fast road between Toulouse and Bourdeaux"-and new home to Vianne Rocher, her six-year-old daughter Anouk, and Anouk's "imaginary" rabbit, Pantoufle. They arrive "on the wind of the carnival", and, a couple of days later, Vianne opens a luxuriant chocolate shop. "La Céleste Praline" bubbles over with the most tempting of confections, topped with an irresistible selection of rich, smooth chocolate drinks. It's Lent, the shop is opposite the church (which Vianne and Anouk don't attend) it's open on Sundays and Francis Reynaud, the austere parish priest with the "measuring, feline look" is not exactly happy. As one by one the villagers sidle into the shop to sample Vianne's concoctions, we learn of their characters and secrets, their loves and desires, their troubles and hopes. Sad, polite Guillame and his dying dog. Shoplifting, beaten Joséphine Muscat. [+]
And Armande Voizin, still vigorous and perceptive in her 80s, who can see Pantoufle, and recognises Vianne for who she really is. But Reynaud has his power base. And when Vianne advertises a Grand Festival of Chocolate to start on Easter Sunday, it's all-out war. War between church and chocolate. Read clearly and precisely by Samantha Bond-whose voice is almost choclatey enough for Vianne-and Gareth Armstrong - who sounds marginally too rich for Reynaud-this is an elegant adaptation of an utterly delicious novel, the denouement of which brings a new, literal meaning to the phrase "a sticky end", and which proves, indisputably, that soft centres are best. -Lisa Gee.
